Advanced Wet Felting – 3D Sculpture

Join us for a 2-day adventure working with a 3D resist to make a unique felted sculpture. Basic wet felting is an asset for this class.

This is a 2-day class which will teach you how to create a 3D wet felted vessel / sculpture. We will start day 1 with designing and creating the resist. Quickly moving on to laying out the fibre to cover all sides of the resist. We will discuss and go over how to create surface texture for our vessels and start to create these surface treatments for our vessels. *Note: Students may wish to make some surface treatments at home between the two classes – fibre will be provided for this. Day 2 will be learning how to properly attach our surface details and completing the felting of our 3D vessel. This technique can be used to create bags, backpacks, and sculptural wearables – you are only limited by your imagination!

All wool and resist material will be provided in a kit. Students will need to bring a 24″ x 48″ bubble wrap, 2 old bath towels, 24″ x 24″ plastic window screen or polyester curtain, biodegradable liquid dish soap, a felting pear (if you have one), a container for water, a bag lunch for both days, and glasses if they are used for detail vision.

Day 1: We will start by discussing shape and form. Students will then create their hat template and learn drafting techniques and start their wool layout.

Day 2: Students will complete the wool layout and use decorative fibres and materials to embellish on their templates. We will then use sanders to prefelt our layouts and begin the fulling process.

Day 3: Students will complete the fulling process of their hats and fit them on the hats blocks. Using a needle and yarn we will then manipulate our hats to our final designs.
